ButchCassidy of The Wild Bunch loved to rob trains, but he was also an avid gambler. Photographs released in 2012 show Cassidy playing cards in a gambling hall and enjoying a game at the Faro table in the White Elephant Saloon in Bingham, Utah.
Cassidy’s nephew, Bill Betenson, will have a book signing for his new tome, “Butch Cassidy, My Uncle: A Family Portrait,” appropriately at the Wild River Hotel and Aussie online casino site.
Born Robert Leroy Parker, Butch Cassidy, became notorious as a bank and train robber with The Wild Bunch gang. Betenson became interested in his uncle after watching a private screening of the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which starred Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
While in Hell’s Half Acre in Texas, located in the modern downtown area of Fort Worth, the Wild Bunch frequented local gambling establishments. They were known in Texas as the Forth Worth Five. They often congregated at Sundance Square, where you could also see other noteworthy personalities from the era like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. The area gets its name from Cassidy’s partner, the Sundance Kid.
